CHAPTER Twenty~Four-Children Of The Night

Sun shone through the houses window faintly. I jolted up.

“Oh my God Tay! Wake up we fell asleep!” I yelled frantically.

He shot up and looked at his watch, “It’s 2:00am, come on lets go.” We quickly gathered up our things and ran back the same way we came to begin with. Everything looked so much different with the sun shining softly on it. I wished we didn’t have to run so fast, I wished we could sit again, and just...sit. I would never forget that night...never. We got back to my house and I climbed back in my window, still a little damp.

“Bye, see you later,” he whispered softly.

“Bye,” I smiled, “Thanks. I love you.”

“I love you to, your welcome.”

He ran out of sight and I collapsed on my bed. It was Thursday, today would probably be just as bad as yesterday. Maybe not, as long as I can keep it from being, I smiled.

* * *
I woke up and it was noon.

“Oh no! I fell asleep!” I yelled.

“Honey are you all right?” my mom asked sitting near me, “You never sleep in this late.”

“Yeah, I’m fine. Just a little tired.”

“Well, Lynn called three times. So get ready and head to her house, Liz is already there.”

“Sure.” My mom walked out of my room.

“I wonder what time Tay woke up? I guess I’ll call him.” As I picked up the phone, I quickly put it back down as he climbed through my window. He didn’t say a word, just laid near me and stroked my hair.

“Hey, what time did you wake up?” I asked quietly, “I was just about to call you.”

He just smiled this silly smile, like he didn’t care about anything. Finally he spoke.

“I never fell back asleep, but I see you did sleepy-head.” We both laughed, until there was a knock on my door. We both sat up.

“Hold on Mom I’m not dressed,” I yelled.

“Bye Tay,” I whispered, “Pretend you are walking to my front door, I will walk with you to Lynn’s, I will be down in one sec.” I said changing quickly.

He just smiled once again and nodded his head. Tay climbed out my window and I opened my door.

“OK, well I’m going to Lynn’s mom, bye,” I smiled.

“Don’t you want a ride?”

“No I am walking with Tay...bye.” I kissed her and joined Tay on the sidewalk.

* * *
We all sat in the waiting room of the doctor’s office. Lynn and her mother had just walked into the doctor’s room.

* * *
Lynn sat by her mom while the doctor sat in front of her desk.

“Now Lynn. This procedure won’t be too painful...but we will put you to sleep for about an hour...by then it will be over. Now would you like me to explain how it works again?”

“No,” she said quietly.

“All right then we can begin as long as you don’t have any questions,” the doctor sighed. The doctor stood up and so did Lynn’s mom.

“I...I...have a question,” Lynn said softly. They both turned around quickly and look at her.

“Would I be able to see my baby before this happens? I wanna see it,” she said looking down, “I wanna know if it’s a boy or girl...I wanna say I am sorry,” she cried.

Her mother quickly took her into her arms as Lynn broke down.

“Lynn,” the doctor began, “I can definitely give you an ultra-sound. The baby is old enough to see it slightly, whether I can tell the babies sex is dependent, but I can try. The only thing I have to say is...are you sure? I mean you cannot have this child...and seeing he or she will only bring more emotional pain.”

Lynn just shook her head, “This is my baby and I want to see it whether I can have it or not!” she yelled.

“All Right...would you like Zac to be in the room?” she asked.

“Yes,” Lynn sniffled.

“I’ll have your mother go get Zac while you change,” the doctor said softly.

Lynn left the room with the doctor while Lynn’s mom headed to the waiting room.

“Zac?” she said opening the waiting room door.

“Yeah?” he answered back.

“Come here,” she said quietly.

We all watched as Zac walked into the hallway and the door was shut. None of us knew what to think.

“Zac, Lynn wants to see the baby, they are going to give her an ultra-sound and she wanted you in the room...she wanted you to share the one experience with her.”

He looked up at Lynn’s mom, “I get to see our child? I get to see it before it goes?” he asked with tears in his throat.

“Yes,” she said softly.

Lynn’s mother knocked on the ultra-sound room door and then opened it. Lynn laid on the table with her shirt up right above her stomach. Zac sat in the seat next to her and grabbed her hand tight. She looked at him and tried to smiled. Lynn’s mother stood in the background while the doctor put the blue gel on her stomach and then rolled the little probe all over her stomach. They all looked at the screen as a black and white fuzzy picture appeared. The doctor got the picture into focus and then left the probe in place on top of Lynn’s semi-big stomach and walked over to the screen. Lynn and Zac stared quietly at the little person on the monitor, since it was very young they couldn't see it very well, but it was slightly visible, enough to tell it was there and a person.

“Well, we can clearly see the head and body, and it looks very healthy,” she smiled.

“Is it a boy of girl?” Lynn asked. The doctor look closely and then turned to the both of them.

“It’s a little baby boy,” she smiled again.

Tears streamed down Lynn’s face no matter how hard she tried to hold them back.

“I can turn on the sound if you would like to hear his heart beat,” she suggested.

“Yes,” Zac choked out. The doctor slowly turned on the sound and they both listened to the slow steady beat.

“Can Lynn and I be alone?” Zac asked shaking in his seat, “Just for 5 minutes...please..” be begged.

“Sure,” the doctor replied walking out with Lynn’s mom.

“That’s our baby Zac,” Lynn cried, “Can you hear him? Can you see him? Look at him, he’s gorgeous Zac.”

“Lynn, I want to watch him grow up...oh god...Lynn I can’t believe this. I can’t believe that we have to do this. Look at him...he’s my son.” Zac threw his head into his hands and began to cry his eyes out.

“Zac, I want my son to live to...but we can’t Zac. But right now, right now at least we can know that we had a kid, and that we saw him, and he was the most beautiful thing in the entire world. Hi,” Lynn said touching the monitor, “Hi, I’m your mom and this is your dad,” Lynn cried softly.

“What would we have named him Lynn?” Zac asked.

“How about Kyle?” Lynn replied.

“I love it,” he said, “I’m sorry Kyle. I’m sorry that you won’t be able to see us, and I am sorry we both were so stupid and I am sorry that we have to do this. And I give you all the right in the world to hate us,” he said.

“Zac,” Lynn said looking at him, “Don’t say that. We were stupid, I know that. But, we have no choice Zac and this is better for him. We have to do this for his sake. And I hate this just as much as you, but everything will be OK. I love you Kyle,” Lynn said as she took the probe off her stomach. She just looked at Zac. He took her into his arms and held her tight.

“We’re gonna get through this you know,” he said quietly, “We’re going to be OK.”

“I know we are Zac, I know.” He kissed her deeply as the doctor walked back in.

“I think it’s time,” she sighed.

Zac un-did his tight grasp, “I love you and I will see you as soon as it is over,” he smiled. She just smiled back as he walked out of the room.

* * *
Zac walked back into the waiting room with Lynn’s mom.

“What was that about?” Tay asked, “You were in there for about an hour.”

“I...I...saw my kid,” he cried. Elizabeth, Tay, Ike and myself turned toward Zac.

“Lynn got an ultra-sound done. And we saw it. It was a little boy, and he was healthy...and...” he just looked at us.

“God Zac, are you OK?” Ike asked. “Yeah, I’m going to be all right. I just wish this would end,” he cried.

Lynn’s mom looked at him. “Zac, what you and Lynn did in there was very mature...being able to handle that, and see that. When the time is right, you two will make fine parents, wether you are together or not.”

“Thank you Pat.”

* * *
After about an hour and a half the door once again opened and we all look up. To our surprise Lynn stood there.

“It’s gone,” she cried, “The babies gone.” She walked very slowly over to Zac and they held each other tight.

“OK now, lets get you to the car,” Lynn’s mom sighed. I didn’t quite get it. I didn’t see how Lynn’s mom was staying so calm...but I guess she had to. If she was to break down then Lynn and Zac would probably do worse. I felt bad for all of them. I walked out with my head hung low and Tay’s arm around my shoulder. Lynn’s mom dropped us off at the boys house and took Lynn and Zac home. She talked it over with Diana and they both agreed the two of them needed a house and quite to themselves.

* * *
After dinner was over Diana sent us up to bed. It was late and we all had one of the longest days ever...or at least I knew that I did. Ike and Liz just collapsed on the bottom bunk more tired then ever, and soon fell asleep. It was 9:00pm when I woke Tay up.

“What?” he asked quietly.

“Come on,” I pointed to the window, “I had fun last night, and so tonight its my turn to take YOU somewhere,” I grinned.

“Um...OK..” Tay said oddly. I opened the window and jumped out. As Tay tried to get out he knocked his head on the window sill and we both laughed.

“OK, that window was WAY to little,” he laughed loudly.

“Shhh!” I commanded. I didn’t want to wake Elizabeth or Ike, but by mistake we did.

“Your not the only one that wanders,” I grinned. He just laughed. I grabbed his hand and led him straight across the street.

“Ever been in these woods before?” I asked. He just laughed louder. “No Bre, honestly I haven’t.”

“Good. Close your eyes and I’ll bring you to where I want us to go.” He closed his eyes tight. Elizabeth and Ike were right behind us and they kept quite.

“This is something new,” Ike laughed in a whisper. Liza laughed, “You got that right.”

“Open your eyes Tay,” I said softly.

“Woah...this is amazing,” he said in awe. In front of us stood a crystal clear lake. The moon made the water shimmer and glisten. We both sat on the moist ground and kissed. He laid me down on the grass and began to kiss my neck.

“Ugh! I can’t watch this,” Ike moaned.

“Me neither,” Liz sighed.

“The sight of my brother making out is not what I need to see,” he laughed. “Do you want to go get something to drink or something?” he asked.

“Sure,” she smiled. They both walked out of the woods and onto the street.

“Tay move,” I said quietly.

“Why?” he asked. I stood up and walked to an overhang by the lake and quickly jumped in.

“It’s cold!!” I yelled loudly, “It’s officially VERY cold!! Come on Tay, you scared?” I fought.

He threw off his shirt and shoes and ran in. I grabbed him by the waste and pulled him under as we kissed.

“You know. You go and get half way undressed so you can have dry clothes to go back in and I get totally soaked,” I moaned, “Thanks!” I said sarcastically.

“Will this help?” he asked taking off my shirt.

“Tay what if someone comes!” I yelled in a whisper.

“Give me your shoes,” he urged.

“No!” I yelled. I was so surprised at him. He went under laughing and fought to get my shoes off. He grabbed them both and ran up to the bank with my shirt and shoes and placed by his after I tried to catch him.

“I’m going to get you!” I yelled.

“How?” he asked running back into the water.

I went under the water, pulled down his pants, took them off and threw them to the other side of the lake.

“OH MY GOD BRE!! At least you have pants!” he yelled trying to jump and catch his pants in the air.

“Oh shut up and be a man,” I laughed kissing and grabbing him tight.

* * *
“How are you doing?” Zac asked looking at Lynn.

“Physical pain...hurting. Emotional pain...even worse,” she cried.

“Me too,” he sighed as her kissed her and grabbed her tight, “Remember what I said though...we’ll get through this.”

“I know. Thanks for being here,” she smiled.

“That’s what I’m for,” he kissed her again. She just shut her eyes and laid her head on his chest as she cried.

* * *
“Thanks for the soda Ike,” Liz smiled as they walked hand in hand.

“Your welcome, and thanks for the company...I defiantly enjoyed it more then the drink.” She grabbed him tight and kissed him deep. “Me too.”

* * *
I had gotten out of the water and put my shirt back on while Tay stayed in the water looking for his clothes. I had thrown his shirt in the water as we where playing and it sank along with his pants. I laughed while he came up from the water.

“Well I found my pants...but no luck with my shirt...but that’s all right,” he sighed. I just laughed as we both put on our shoes. “Aren’t you cold?” I asked.

“Not if you sit here in my lap,” he smiled.

“Sure.” I sat in his lap and kissed his chest.

“Your cold Tay. Lets head back. Plus it has to be at least midnight, and we have to change.”

“I love you Bre,” he said.

“I love you to.”

I jumped on the back of him and he carried me home. As we climbed through the window Ike and Liz laughed.

“How are the children of the night doing?” Ike laughed.

“What?” Tay replied.

“You guys have to learn to SNEAK out. We followed you but then left because you guys were getting a little too close. You guys are sick...but passionate,” Ike continued to laugh.

“I would kill you now Ike. But as you can see I have to change because I am dripping wet.”

“Actually we went to get some drinks and we just got back too,” Liz laughed, “But we didn’t just get back from having sex in a lake.”

“We didn’t...oh never mind I am going to change,” Tay moaned. Even as Tay left Ike kept laughing.

“WHAT on earth do you find so amusing Ike?” I asked.

“You guys are wearing each others pants,” he burst out laughing. I looked down. I didn’t know how it happened but it did. Liz began to crack up.

“Oh well,” I moaned being a little embarrassed. Tay came back into the room and whispered in my ear.

“I had your pants on,” he laughed.

“No shit,” I laughed back. I went and changed and we all fell asleep.

* * *
“Hey Zac. I wonder what everyone is up to?” she asked.

“It’s after midnight...I am sure they are all sleeping and have been.”

“Probably,” she sighed. She tried to roll over to kiss him but couldn’t. He noticed and kissed her deeply.

“Try to get some sleep baby, you need it,” he sighed.

“Good night Zac.”

“Good night sweetie.”

* * *
As I laid in bed I thought for a while. I mostly thought about Nick, that I missed him. I didn't know how, since we never met after that night, but I missed him and I wanted to talk to him. I told him so much about me that night, things that took me so long to tell Tay. I could really open up to him, we had something specail, some kind of really specail bond. I knew I couldn't let it go to waste and I knew that he was really, probably the only person I could talk to, because I didn't want to tell Taylor. He wasn't very good at helping me get my feelings out, he would tell me it was 'OK' and leave it at that. While I knew with Nick, he would listen and there was a lot I could really get off my chest. I decided I would call him in the next few days. I really was beginning to miss him, and I didn't know how it was possible, I really didn't.
