This I Promise You~ Part 18

May came and gone in a flash, everyone trying to rest from the long hard tour. Management allowed the boys to have June off as well, considering Nick would have taken it off anyway. Plus, the boys had been working non stop and there was a well needed break. Brian and Leigh-Anne planned the wedding for September to give them some time to get it all arranged. It was much harder then expected, trying to keep everything hidden from the press so they could have a safe, quiet and family wedding. Nick and Kayla both agreed that they would wait to get married. She was going to have the baby and then they would settle down for a bit. They were hoping to be married in February of the next year. They didn’t care about putting off the wedding, they loved each other and they knew that neither of them were complaining. The baby was due to arrive in a week and Kayla was pretty much house ridden. For her small frame it was a lot of weight to pull around. Nick was in bed with Kayla, stroking her hair.

“How are my baby’s doing?” he smirked.

“I’m fine but this little one is pretty feisty. Here put your hand right on my belly,” she said placing his hand right on top.

He left it there for a minute and felt something from inside her hit it. They both began to laugh hysterically and then kissed each other lovingly.

“That was definitely a foot,” Nick informed.

“Yeah I think so. Remember yesterday when she elbowed me, you could see it,” she reminded.

They both laughed lightly. The baby brought hours of enjoyment for both of them, even though it wasn’t born yet. Nick knew that they both were going to make perfect parents. He had been looking at some of the ultra-sound pictures taken a few days ago when they went to visit the doctor, everything was visible. He was pretty much in awe by the whole thing. Suddenly he heard her yelp and quickly looked over.

“What happened, did she kick again?” he smiled.

“Uh no, no not that. She just, ahh, told me that she’s ready to come out. Nick my water broke!” Kayla yelled getting a little worried.

Suddenly Nick shot up and started running around the room.

“Nick, Nick!” she yelled.

He stopped in his tracks and looked at her, “What?” he asked nervous as hell.

“Stop it!” she laughed yelling, “Just grab the bags that are packed and help me to the car. We need to get to the hospital...NOW!” she yelled as she let out a cry of pain.

When he helped her up he saw blood on the sheets, “Uhh Kayla, is that suppose to happen?” he asked.

“Yes, Nick, my water broke of course it is! If your worried about your damn car grab a towel!” she yelled, “Just let’s get going.”

“Fuck the car, I don’t care!” he sighed exasperated already.

When they got to the hospital they took immediate care to Kayla, putting her in a wheel chair and getting her to a room. She saw the Dr. Baker was there and sighed in relief. She trusted herself with the doctor, knowing that she was going to deliver her baby. Once everything was situated and she was in a room Nick pulled out his cell phone.

“Should I call everyone?” he asked.

She let out a cry of pain, grabbing his arm, “Damn this hurts!” she screamed.

“I take that as a yes,” he grinned.

When the contraction died down she laughed a bit, “Yes.”

“Their all coming ASAP,” Nick smiled as he held her hand putting the phone down, “Now how’s my princess doing?”

“Shitty, Nick ugh, when the contractions come they hurt like hell,” she moaned.

“Calm down, breath,” he smiled, “Remember, breath.”

She hit him lightly laughing. When she saw a nurse come in she stopped and smiled at her.

“Hi nurse,” she said in a tired voice.

Suddenly another contraction came and she squeezed Nick’s hand tight. Her teeth gritted together as she moaned. When she eased up Nick pulled his hand away.

“Man girl, you hurt,” he grinned.

The nurse just laughed, “You two have a ways to go.”

She checked Kayla out underneath the hospital gown and wrote a few things down. She is only dilated to 5, you have to dilate to 10. So I would guess you have another two or three hours, and honey, you aint’ felt nothin’ yet,” she laughed lightly, “But don’t you worry, we have plenty of medicine for that.”

Kayla just smiled slightly, a little scared, “This is all happening so fast,” she sighed.

“It always does sweetheart,” the nurse smiled, “Your having the baby naturally right?”

“Yes,” Kayla nodded.

“OK, well I will be back in a little bit, ring if you need me,” she smiled walking out.

“Are you ready?” Kayla asked smiling.

“Do I have a choice?” he laughed brushing her face lightly.

Nick and Kayla both looked at the door when they saw everyone walk in.

“Guys!” she yelled as they all walked towards her.

“Kay Bear how are you?” Brian asked as he gave her a hug.

Kevin was right behind him, “You OK Kay?”

She laughed a little, “Yeah, just in pain from the contractions.” Everyone got up and gave her hugs, then stood around her while Nick still sat at her side. She let out another scream as another contraction took over her. Nick quickly dabbed her forehead with a cool rag he was given and let her squeeze him for support.

“Ow,” AJ said cringing.

“Your telling me,” Kayla sighed calming down a bit, “It’s just all so sudden, but I guess she just wants to finally come say ‘hi’,” she laughed, “The good news is just a little bit longer of this torture...”

Suddenly before she could say anymore she saw Dr. Baker walk in.

“OK all of you, I think it’s time you all went and sat in the waiting room. Nick you can stay in here if you’d like,” the doctor ordered.

They all waved and said their final ‘good-byes’ and ‘I love yous’ as the door shut behind them.

“All right Kayla,” the Doctor began, “I have some medication for you. Let’s just see how far along you are.”

The doctor checked everything and nodded, “Well you’ve been going through this...”

She was cut off by another moan of pain and heavy breathing from Kayla.

“Going through this pain for three hours,” the doctor continued laughing a bit and your dilated to 9. Very good considering your age. I will give you a injection now to calm the pain because you two are going to be parents VERY soon,” she smiled.

Nick just cringed as the doctor injected the medication into Kayla feeling awful for all the pain she was going through. The doctor left the room and Nick just took Kayla into his arms the best he could. He watched as she cried a little.

“Baby please don’t cry, it’s OK, the pain will be gone soon,” he promised.

“No, it’s not that. It’s just, we’re going to be parents soon. I am soo excited,” she cried. She had another contraction, this one longer then most and held onto Nick for support.

“I’ve always wanted to be a mom, and I am just so genuinely happy. A whole another chapter in our lives is going to begin in an hour, it’s just so amazing.”

He smiled tears on his cheeks, “I know Kay I know. I’m so excited too. I love you baby.”

“I love you too.”

* * *

The hour dragged on slowly, Nick had been in and out of the room, telling all of them what was going on and how things were progressing. It was just a brand new experience for all of them. Brian watched as Nick walked back into the room with a smile on his face, he had to put on all the different clothes and sterilize his hands before he went back in because it was just about time.

“God Leigh, they are both just so...so...I don’t even know the words to say,” Brian said amazed.

“I know, it’s like our little Kayla is having baby, with little Nicky,” Kevin responded.

Leigh-Anne just smiled contentedly, “It’s just all amazing if you ask me. It’s a miracle.”

Everyone agreed with her.

* * *

Dr. Baker was in the room and so were many nurses. Nick stood right next to Kayla as she screamed again in pain, it was her final contraction.

“OK Kayla it’s time,” Dr. Baker smiled, “I want you just to hold Nick’s hand, and look up at him OK. And what I need you to do is just push,” she smiled.

Suddenly she looked up into Nick’s eyes and he met her gaze, “Nick I love you more then the world itself. My life is nothing without you, I can’t ever live without you. I will never stop loving you,” she smiled at him.

“Kayla you are my angel from heaven. I will never ever let go of you, I will never stop loving you either. You are my world, I’d be lost without you, I love you,” he smiled back.

They kissed one last time. The kiss lasted a few minutes until Kayla pulled away and looked at the doctor.

“Are you ready Kayla?” she asked.

Kayla looked at the doctor then at Nick, “Yes,” she said firmly.

“OK, then give me a BIG push Kayla, I know you can do it,” she said.

“Come on Babes, do it for me,” Nick routed her on.

She pushed hard screaming so loud she thought that she would loose her voice. She breathed in and out steadily and heavily.

“OK, that was amazing Kayla, great job,” the doctor commented as she looked back up at her, “Let’s do it again, ready, PUSH Kayla.”

Kayla pushed again, harder then she had before. Nick watched as her face squished together with pain. He just held her hand tighter and kissed it softly.

“Come on Kayla, you can do it, for us,” Nick smiled.

He saw her push harder, yelling louder. Then suddenly it seemed like a nightmare. Kayla stopped screaming, stopped pushing. The doctor looked up in a surprised manor and then yelled.

“Get him out of here now, we need to save this woman and her baby NOW!” the doctor yelled, “Now, come on people.”

Nick’s face fell, “No I have to stay here, Kayla come on baby wake up!” he yelled, “Come on! I can’t go!”

He tried fighting back the male nurses but they pushed him out the door.

“NO!” he screamed loudly pounding on the door.

He turned back around, pulling the mask from his face and fell to the ground, just crying. Brian and Kevin ran up to him along with the others, something was wrong, very wrong.

“Nick, Nick what happened?” Brian said trying to stay calm.

“Kayla...” he began having no voice.

He breathed again and tried to continue, “Kayla, her...her heart stopped...” he cried louder.

He opened his eyes and saw all the somber faces around him.

“She...what?” Brian said with tears welling in his eyes.

“Her heart stopped,” he panted, “The baby wasn’t out yet...the doctors threw me out, I don’t know what’s going on, I don’t know if she’s all right!”

Leigh-Anne let out a cry and just collapsed onto Brian crying hard. He tried to console her, but him being inconsolable himself it didn’t work.

“God no, please, please let everything be fine,” Kevin begged as Kirsten hung on him.

They sat near Brian and Leigh on the couch all crying trying to tell each other it will be all right. AJ and Howie were still in shock, while Angel and Alicia did their best not to break down completely. But there was no way to stop it. Nick somehow found the strength to get up and sit in a big chair near everyone. Tears fell freely, as he prayed quietly, begging for there to be a chance. Leigh-Anne sat on the arm of the chair and hugged him tight.

“Calm down Nicky, just hope and pray,” she said wiping away her own tears.

“That’s all I can do,” he said groggily.

“Mr. Carter?” Dr. Baker said quietly.

Suddenly everyone shot their heads up in her direction, wanting answers.

“Yes doctor, what happened? What's going on?” Nick begged for answers.

“Kayla’s heart stopped, it was too much for her to handle, she was still young and this much pain, stress and fear just made her heart stop,” the doctor explained, “We did deliver the baby and she is in perfect health. She weighs 7 pounds 8 ounces, and like I said, perfect health. She’s a fighter,” the doctor smiled slightly.

Nick smiled holding his hand on his chest, “Oh thank God,” he sighed, “And how is Kayla?”

“Kayla was a fighter too. We got her heart started again long enough to retrieve the baby, but...” the doctor continued with a little less of a voice, “Nick...Kayla didn’t...well Kayla has left us. God thought it was time.”

The room was still silent, but this time it was an eerie silence, a grieving silence.

“NO!” Nick screamed, “NO! Kayla has to be all right! KAYLA IS MY FIANCÉE, WE NEVER GOT MARRIED YET!! I CAN’T DO THIS ALONE! I NEED HER!” he screamed tears streaming down his cheeks.

“I’m sorry,” the doctor sighed, “You can see her if you’d like. She is still in the room.”

Nick silently got up looking back at everyone and watching the doctor walk away. As he walked through the doors he had never felt such pain in his entire life. He stood by the bed for a minute, just crying, blinking his eyes making sure it was all real. Unfortunately it was all too real. He sat down on the bed next to her and looked at her lifeless body. He kissed her lips and felt the coldness of them.

“No,” he cried harshly, “Why Kayla? Why did you have to go? We never got married, we never got to start our life together. God what did I do to deserve this? I love you so much Kayla, what do I do now? Where do I go from here?” he breathed violently.

He sat there taking her lifeless body in his arms, thinking back to everything they had gone through. Remembering when he first saw here, and when the first kissed, made love and told each other ‘I love you.’ He stood up kissing her once more.

“For you Kayla, for you I’m going to raise our baby. You are my one true love, I will never be able to love another woman besides my daughter. I don’t care what anyone says, you lived an amazing life. You taught me everything there is to know, and what you taught me I will teach our daughter. Nothing will ever be the same Kayla, nothing. But I promised to love you forever and that’s what I intend to do, this I promise you,” he said softly walking out of the room.
